Happy Halloween! What better way to enjoy this Spooktacular holiday than to discuss the famous haunts in and around the Charleston area. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, it is no wonder some that have passed before us still call Charleston home. Have you ever experience a ghost? Want to experience a ghost? Here are some of the most haunted places and ghost stories around the Charleston area.
Battery Carriage House Inn
The Battery Carriage House Inn is not home to one ghost, but multiple ghosts. One of the most popular ghosts is the headless torso and the gentleman ghost. The gentleman ghost is said to be a member of the family that once owned the home and the headless torso ghost is believed to be a person who was around during the Civil War era. The homes in the Battery were severely damaged during the Civil War making it likely that those who lost their lives still have unfinished business.
Poogans Porch Restaurant
Known for its southern cuisine, Poogans Porch is the oldest independently owned culinary establishment in Charleston. This restaurant is tucked away on Queen Street in a Victorian-style home. Zoe Amand, a spinster school teacher, is thought to be the spirit that roams this location. She is often seen in a white nightgown staring out the window long after the restaurant has closed. She is also known to tickle ladies that visit the restroom. Zoe Amand did die in the house in 1954, but maybe she never left her beloved home.
Old Charleston Jail

This famous haunt was featured on Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures. This jail has locked away innumerable criminals, including the first female serial killer in the United States. Those who have gone into the old jail have heard and seen footsteps appear on the ground, vanishing items right out of sight, sounds of ghostly whispers, and slamming doors. Jails are not for the faint of heart and this particular jail saw the demise of over 13,000 prisoners who were executed on sight.

USS Yorktown
The USS Yorktown was decommissioned in 1970 after earning 12 battlestars and the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action during WWII and earning five more battlestars during the Vitenam War. It is currently a museum in Patriots Point and is one of the most haunted locations in Charleston. Employees and guests have both experienced paranormal activities such as cold spots, hearing doors slam, disembodied voices, seeing strange movements, and an occasional apparition or two.
In fact, my husband has been on the USS Yorktown on more than one occasion and has a ghost story like no other I've ever heard. While touring the USS Yorktown with his family, there was a thunderstorm and all the lights flickered. As they flickered, every member of my husband's family saw an apparition in the ship's control room, that quickly disappeared as fast as it came.
There are plenty of haunts in Charleston. I hope you enjoyed just a few of our favorites. Have a spooktacular Halloween!
