Who is ready for a weekend getaway? Summer has come to an end and the children are back in school, let's enjoy the warmer weather while we still can and go on a weekend getaway. If you are in the Charleston Trident Area you know there are so many things to do in the area, but let's step away and explore some other areas that many may forget are just a few hours drive away but offer so much fun!
Savannah, Georgia
Located about two hours away from Charleston is Savannah, GA. Savannah is known as Charleston's wild younger sister city. It has the same charm as Charleston, but with the ability to drink booze in an open container on the street. So you can say it is a mix of Charleston and New Orleans. It is a foodie's dream, a history buff's love, and a spooky spot for your paranormal fans. Go out and enjoy the beauty of Savannah.
Wilmington, North Carolina
Wilmington is about four hours away from Charleston and is a favorite of Hollywood. It has been the site of many movies and television shows including Dawson's Creek. You can visit the Wilmington Railroad Museum which includes a 100-year-old steam locomotive. You can also visit the Cape Fear Museum of Natural History and Science and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. While there make sure you visit Copper Penny for some off-the-chain onion rings as they were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.
Greenville, South Carolina
Greenville is about three hours away from Charleston but provides a completely different nature view. Charleston has the water and beaches, whereas Greenville has the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. Greenville has something to offer everyone. You can hike the Swamp Rabbit Trail, go to a concert or Broadway show, eat delicious foods, and go shopping downtown. Also, go on the mice hunt downtown. It is fun for the whole family.
Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville is approximately four hours away from Charleston and also offers a change of scenery. Asheville is a hipster town full of artists, coffee shops, and local foodies. This location offers everything from the largest residential home (The Biltmore) to hiking, biking, and other adventurous activities. Personally, our children love the McDonalds near Biltmore as it has a self-playing piano and looks like a little German village. If you like beer, you should take an official or self-guided craft brewery tour. Feeling nostalgic? Visit the Pinball Museum downtown, which offers an interactive pinball experience with machines from the past 100 years.
St. Augustine, Florida
Take a trip down to historic St. Augustine, Florida which is only about four and a half hours from Charleston. You can visit military forts, stately castles, and a spiraling lighthouse. Did you know the lighthouse was featured on an episode of Ghost Hunters? History, not your thing? No worries. There is plenty of shopping to do as well. You can shop the various local shops, and art galleries, and tour Victorian homes that have been converted into little boutiques. Lastly, you can enjoy the many golf courses, fishing and charter boats, horseback riding, hiking, and camping.
These are just some of the many little road trips and weekend getaways that you can experience. Everything from water views to mountain views, history to new age concepts, and everything in between. Here's to safe travels!
